Presentation

Providing presentation learning zones is key because mastering the art of presentation is an essential skill for modern learners. Students should be offered regular opportunities in multiple settings to practice and develop their skills.

According to an Education Development International survey (CBI, 2010), employers are dissatisfied with the work-readiness of fresh graduates applying for entry-level roles. Over two-thirds of employers (70%) want to see educators making the employability skills of young people a top priority.

Students can find the prospect of presenting their ideas in or outside the classroom a daunting experience. Creating comfortable engaging presentation learning zones to practice these skills helps to reduce anxiety and build confidence.

Presentation skills are important to:

  • Communicate complex information simply
  • Communicate thoughts and feelings effectively
  • Develop self-confidence
  • Gain real-world skills

Perfect Presentation Skills

WF Education designs presentation learning zones fit for every space. We can design presentation zones for learning spaces, libraries and common areas. We can also incorporate these elements into specialised teaching areas, such as Science, Design and Technology and Sport.

Effective presentation skills are essential to developing clear communication and are part of the learning experience. Presentations are a great way to have students practise all language systems areas (vocabulary, grammar, discourse and phonology) and develop key skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening).

After completing a project, a presentation is a channel for students to share with others what they have learned. It is also a chance to challenge and expand on their understanding of the topic by having others ask questions. And in the world of work, a confident presenter can inform and persuade colleagues effectively.

The CBI survey noted two-thirds of employers (65%) – rising to nearly three-quarters of the largest employers (73%) – believe gaining practical experience is the most valuable step young people can take to improve their prospects.

Create a presentation space

Presentation skills include public speaking. Students must be audible, articulate, and clear. An effective and dedicated presentation space where the speaker can make eye contact with their audience throughout the presentation is essential for maintaining engagement.

Research has shown that people have a better chance of understanding and retaining information when they can see it. Therefore, oral presentations are not enough. In addition to public speaking skills, a presentation may involve visuals either written or on a screen.

Encourage students of all ages to engage and practice their presentation skills in front of their peers. Create dedicated zones for the purpose to be used formally and informally. These areas are also perfect in library or common spaces for storytime, poetry recitations, performance and more.

Presentation learning zones are also useful in Sports and PE teaching areas – bringing together the space, and pedagogy to ensure learner success.

WF Education’s range of configurable solutions includes elements to create dedicated presentation zones that include screens, room dividers, whiteboards, tiered and soft seating and mobile furniture that can be reconfigured.
