Everna™ Primary Reading Modules
Develop Lifelong Readers
Reading for enjoyment is a focus area for the National Literacy Trusts Primary Literacy Guide (2020/21) and Waterstones Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell has launched her Life-changing Libraries project, which highlights the importance of library spaces for primary schools.
Decades of research show a reader for pleasure is more likely to be happier, healthier, to do better at school – all irrespective of background.
In 2019, the National Literacy Trust and Nottingham Trent University found that children using their school or public library were more likely to read for pleasure and had better reading and writing attitudes.
An environment conducive to the exploration of literature is essential. Whether selecting a book to take home, researching a project, or sitting comfortably for story time, library spaces should be welcoming and fit-for-purpose. It is a game changer to have books on display, facing outwards, open, ready to catch the eye of children walking past. Shelves should not be crammed full; less really is more!
Children won’t search through shelves of well-used books unless they really want something – your library should be like a sweet shop with goodies to catch their eye.
WF Education worked with librarians and educators to design modules specifically intended to engage primary school aged children to read for pleasure and improve literacy, giving custodians choice and speed of implementation.
The display and browser elements of the designs encourage younger children to explore new titles and genres, placing books ‘face-up’ in front of them to draw attention. These options are combined with traditional flat shelves to increase book storage capacity.
Our choices of cosy or open dens and comfortable seating instantly attract young people to linger and read.
Some of our modules include eye-catching, age-appropriate graphics to further designate the space, clearly defining the purpose of the zone.
1. Select your module
Cultivating a space in the library that younger children can activate and own sends a strong signal they are valued and welcome.
Choose from our four pre-defined solutions, with options to create spaces with a considered balance of book capacity and browsing opportunities or offer more stock capacity or more presentation shelving in your space.
Each module is different and offers you a specific:
- Space requirement
- Book capacity
- Recommended number of students
Each module has three options:
A – optimise engagement by increasing the number of displays and seating options. It focuses on providing immediate access to teens favourite literature.
B – a balance between presentation and book stock capacity if the space is limited. It optimises the mix between seats, storage and displays.
C – maximises storage capacity for libraries with a smaller footprint and large literature stock (books).
